Our History
| | | | | In June 1961, fifty-one charter members established the Johnson County Young Matrons for the
purpose of supporting philanthropies and civic causes, as well as fostering social interaction among members.
In
the first year of its existence, the 91 women club members volunteered 875 hours to support various causes and raised a total
of $541.89. A portion of this money was earmarked for a clubhouse building fund. Only 8 years later with a membership of 140
women, over $12,000 was in this fund. That same year our first JCYM Homes Tour was launched and raised almost $2000.
JCYM identified and filled a great need in Johnson County when it established Temporary Lodging for Children. In early 1970,
there was a clear need to establish a children’s emergency shelter home in Johnson County. The JCYM membership decided
to fill this important need and use their building fund for that purpose.
Two years later this dream became the
reality of Temporary Lodging for Children (TLC). On July 23, 1972 TLC officially opened its doors with almost $18,000 contributed
by Johnson County Young Matrons.
Through the years numerous philanthropies have benefited from the dedication of
our membership. The JCYM Homes Tour was reestablished in 1992 and is eagerly anticipated each November. In 2003, $166,116
and 20,116 hours of volunteer service were donated to the community by JCYM members. | | |
